In short: most choices stay on your device. Google may set cookies only if you allow advertising or analytics and those products are switched on.

Essential / always on: remembering that you closed the cookie banner, your anonymous client ID for optional email links, theme and language preferences, and the cities you pin.

Functional (optional): remembering recent weather on this device between visits, and precise location helpers if you allow them.

Advertising (optional): Google AdSense when configured. Measuring whether an ad slot was seen also needs this choice.

Analytics (optional): our own simple page-usage measurement and, if configured, Google Analytics. “Accept all” does not turn Analytics on — choose it under Manage preferences if you want it.

Marketing email preference is reserved and is not used for extra marketing trackers beyond emails you explicitly sign up for.

meridian:tier — reserved (the product is free today).

sessionStorage meridian_analytics_sid — session ID used only when Analytics is on.

Demo journal posts may keep comments only on your device.

Staff only: an HttpOnly meridian_admin_session cookie for the admin console.

essential — always on for basic service memory.

functional — weather saved on this device and precise location helpers you choose.

advertising — Google AdSense when configured; also required for first-party ad-slot view events.

analytics — first-party usage beacon and Google Analytics when configured.

marketing — reserved.

Banner choices: Essential only, Accept functional, Accept all, or Manage preferences. Reopen preferences from the floating Settings control when it is available (it may hide while you scroll, and may be hidden under reduced motion). Accept all = functional + advertising; turn Analytics on separately if you want it.

When advertising consent is on and AdSense is live, Google may set cookies under Google’s policies.

When analytics consent is on and GA4 is configured, Google Analytics may set its own cookies.

We do not control those third-party cookies in full. Review Google’s privacy and ad settings alongside this policy.

Turning off Advertising stops our AdSense script on later visits. Turning off Analytics stops our usage beacon and GA loader when configured.
